Travel | From Russia to Georgia: Volgograd & Elista

Hello there and welcome to another trip with Way Inspire!

This summer I had a chance to visit an amazing country named Georgia. It's extremely beautiful land with friendly people, wonderful food and tasty wine. And as you may know (and if you don't, check out my about me page) I live in central Russia, and since it was a car trip and Russia is huge, my family and I got to see a couple of beautiful Russian cities on our way.

First of them is Volgograd. Now it's an industrial city on one of the longest Russian rivers Volga. In the last century, the city was called Stalingrad and it was an important spot during World War II. If you're familiar with the history of the USSR or just WWII, you may know that there's happened one of the biggest battles - the Battle of Stalingrad.

This whole memorial complex (Mamayev Kurgan) is dedicated to that war and fallen soldiers.

This building was bombed during the war and never reconstructed. And behind it, there's an exposition called "The Battle of Stalingrad" and some Soviet and German military enginery.

Volgograd is a very interesting city from the historical point. And I'm pretty sure there are more places to explore but, unfortunately, we didn't have much time.
Also, Volgograd is one of eleven Russian cities where the FIFA World Cup will take place in 2018.

(this construction on the right is going to be a new stadium for the World Cup)

And moving forward to Georgia, we meet another beautiful city called Elista.

Elista is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia and the main confession here is Buddhism. That's why you can meet statues of Buddha in a lot of places.

To be honest, I've never seen any Buddhist monastery or Buddhist anything at all before. So it was new to me and I must say that it all looks really amazing.
Again, we had really little time to walk through the city, but everything we saw so far was pretty impressive.

And it took us some time to find this. This is the biggest Buddhist monastery of the region and one of the biggest in Europe.

It is really huge and truly wonderful. Outside it's also surrounded by 17 pagodas (little towers). Unfortunately, it's forbidden to take photos inside the building, but I must just say that this is one of the most beautiful monasteries I've ever seen. It has a large statue of Buddha (its height is about nine meters) and walls are covered in paintings (but sadly I don't know what they mean).

And now we continue our road trip to Georgia. The next city is Tbilisi!

Meanwhile over to you: have you ever been to Russia? If so, what cities have you visited? And if no, would you like to? :)
xx, D
